The concept I was missing is that the pie chart labels must be tied to a label on the spreadsheet. Your suggestion led me to try another way of creating the chart that works: Insert Chart, select the label cell on the spreadsheet, select the data cell it corresponds to, repeat for each instance of label/data and then select the pie chart control from the elements gallery to create it. The data is separated from the labels in the first column and only certain data values in the columns(totals) are used in the pie chart, not the whole column(for instance M5, M10, M15). There are six options for data labels: None (default), Center, Inside End, Inside Base, Outside End, and More Data Label Title Options. It is one that grows columns to the right-hand side over time. Click Add Chart Element and click Data Labels. > you're trying to plot and I'll try to help.
